Traveling with your pet

Whether it is the first time you are traveling with your pet or you are a frequent traveler, it is important to keep in mind that the regulations of each country are constantly changing, so we recommend that before you travel with your pet, you inform yourself well in advance of the requirements for the entry of animals at your destination. However, regardless of the destination there are a number of requirements that are common to all countries for travel:

- Microchip

- Passport

- Rabies vaccine applied at least 21 days before the trip if it is the first time it is applied or it is expired. Remember that in Spain revaccination is mandatory annually.

It is important to keep in mind that there are countries that, in addition to the rabies vaccine, require a document certifying that the vaccine has been effective. To do so, a blood sample must be taken from the pet at least one month after the vaccine has been administered and sent to the laboratory.

This procedure until we obtain the results can take up to three months and it is necessary that the result we obtain is equal or higher than 0.5 IU/ml, if the result is lower it means that the vaccine has not been effective and therefore our pet cannot travel. In this last case, the vaccine can be repeated and a second post-vaccination sample can be sent.

Therefore, be sure to organize your trip in advance and keep in mind that although the destination country does not require this document, you may be asked for it in case you return to Spain from some countries that are not members of the European Union.

Where can I find out exactly what each country requires?

You can check the requirements that your pet must meet on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. We leave you the links below:
